1. Hardware & Software Prerequisites
Before beginning the installation, ensure your Android device meets the necessary technical criteria:
Android 8.0 (Oreo) or newer. Android 12, 13, 14, or 15 strongly recommended for modern Vulkan 1.3 drivers.
At least 5 GB of free internal storage for the Ubuntu RootFS, plus sufficient space for your game installations.
Minimum 4 GB of RAM. 8 GB or 12 GB RAM recommended to avoid memory pressure when loading 3D textures.
2. Step 1: Downloading Official APK
Obtain the official Winlator APK directly from the developer's release channel. Do not download modified or repacked builds from unknown third-party file locker sites, as these may contain unwanted background processes.
3. Step 2: Enabling Unknown Sources
Android requires explicit authorization to install applications outside the Google Play Store. When you open the downloaded Winlator_11.2.apk file:
- A system prompt will appear stating: "For your security, your phone is not allowed to install unknown apps from this source."
- Tap Settings on the pop-up modal.
- Toggle the switch to "Allow from this source" for your web browser or file manager.
- Tap the back button, then select Install.
4. Step 3: First-Launch Container Setup
Once installed, tap the Winlator icon in your app drawer:
- Initial Asset Extraction: The app will automatically unpack the Ubuntu RootFS, PRoot binary, and Wine system files into private app storage. Do not minimize or close the app during this process. It takes roughly 30–60 seconds depending on your device's flash storage speed (e.g., UFS 2.2 vs UFS 4.0).
- Grant Storage Permissions: When prompted, grant Winlator permission to access storage so it can mount your Download directory as Drive D:.
5. Step 4: Creating & Configuring Your First Container
In the main Winlator dashboard, tap the "+" icon in the top right corner to create a container. Here are the optimal configuration options:
Set to 1280x720 (16:9) or 800x600. Rendering at native 1440p or 4K on a mobile screen causes severe GPU throttling.
Select Turnip (Adreno) if you have a Qualcomm Snapdragon device. For MediaTek, Google Tensor, or Exynos devices, choose VirGL.
Choose DXVK (v2.2 or v2.4) for 3D DirectX 9/11 games. For 2D or classic titles prior to 2004, select CNC DDraw or WineD3D.
Set Box64 to Fast or Performance. If a game crashes during launch, switch this preset to Compatibility.
Once configured, tap the checkmark (✓) at the bottom right to save the container.
6. Step 5: Input Controls & Gamepads
Winlator features extensive input customization:
- Virtual Touch Controls: In the sidebar menu, open Input Controls. You can choose from pre-made profiles (such as RTS Mouse, Gamepad 12-Button, or FPS WASD) or construct a bespoke on-screen layout with resizable translucent buttons.
- Physical Controllers: Pair your Bluetooth controller (Xbox Series/One, PS4 DualShock, PS5 DualSense) with your Android device. Winlator natively binds these via XInput or DirectInput.
7. Step 6: Transferring & Running PC Games
Running games in Winlator does not require complex command-line scripts:
- Copy your DRM-free game directory or installer (from sources such as GOG.com) to your phone's internal storage path:
/storage/emulated/0/Download. - Launch your Winlator container by tapping the three dots menu on your container card and selecting Run.
- A Windows desktop environment will load. Double-click My Computer.
- Open Drive D: (which points to your Android Download folder).
- Double-click the setup executable or game
.exefile to install or launch the game.
8. Troubleshooting Common Errors
"App Not Installed" Error during APK install
Ensure you have sufficient free storage space and that you uninstalled any conflicting unofficial or modified fork with mismatched cryptographic signing certificates.
Black Screen or Crash on Game Start
If your device uses a MediaTek or Exynos chipset, you cannot use Turnip drivers. Switch Graphics Driver to VirGL or LLVMpipe. If running an older DirectX 8/9 game, switch DX Wrapper from DXVK to WineD3D or CNC DDraw.
Sound Crackling or High Audio Latency
Open your container settings, locate Audio Driver, and select PulseAudio. You can adjust the audio buffer size to 60ms or 80ms to prevent stutter during high CPU load.
